FWIW, I spent the past month hacking Mandriva (2008 free) with different tools. And the same problem there.
So it looks like waiting for the next kernel update - except that this is "non-critical" but (for those unaffected...). So maybe two kernels away ? In the future, I'll look at www.hardware4linux.info before springing for a distro.
