No, NM with this patch recognizes only dial up connections that were established via itself (I use knetworkmanager to connect my modem). I don't know anything about gnome-ppp, but kppp is incompatible with NM - NM uses 'pon' and 'poff' utilities to connect/disconnect dial up connections (in debian based systems), but kppp manages dialup connections on its own.
