I don't know if this will help, but, for the people using Dell OptiPlex 740 with BIOS version 2.0.12, upgrade to version 2.1.6 released on 5/20/2008
My Hardy install is also up-to-date (last Friday 5/23/2008 some xorg updates were installed). Since then , I didn't have any problems so far with mouse hangs / freeze Dunno :( maybe some nasty xorg bug , or maybe Dell's fault, or the even worst: both's fault! For the people still having this issu, I would say to first of all, in all instances, check if your BIOS is up-to-date in FIRST PLACE...
