I have the same problem with my microsoft trackball optical mouse. It works on startup but will then die. Unplug and replug seem to fix it for a short while.
I am running Edgy Beta1 AMD64 x2 2.6.17-10-generic Kernel Nvidia Beta driver.. had the same problem with this kernel and nv and nvidia-glx drivers. I am on a New Dell Dimension E521 so no touchpad as mentioned in the other bug report.
