I will have to try your conditions that cause a freeze, but I am experiencing a freeze with a Radeon 9500 Pro (r300) using fglrx when I boot into my trunk/ build KDE 4 from svn. Every now and then I will get a silly lockup in KDE 3 as well. Right now I am fighting some other things with fglrx that I am trying to figure out.
