Sorry, I cannot answer this question since all those windows usually have no 
names, neither german nor english, so I don't know if it is synaptic or 
something else. If your read this with intuition
"Menu "Anwendungen" (applications?) > Hinzufügen/Entfernen (add/remove?)" 
does it answer your question?

It is the very first menu item in the upper left corner of the screen 
"Anwendungen" (applications?)
>From this pull down menu it is the lowest entry, calles "Hinzufügen/Entfernen"

The second way is completely different from this: doubleclicking a file,
totem opens, states, that it need some more codecs and if it should
download and install. again no idea if this dialog is part of totem or
totem passes the problem to a piece of software you call "synaptic".

Maybe it would be a good idea for developers in making it a standard to
write the name of the application always in the top frame of a window.
At least this would facilitate identification and discussions about this
piece of software.
