As Vincent said, this is a configuration issue, so nothing related to packaging. Moreover, x-d-s shouldn't deal with firefox icon symlink: it's firefox package job, you'll possibly break upgrades from previous releases (since firefox.png was shipped by previous firefox versions), and it'll be a pain to take care of both firefox-2 and firefox-3.0 (maybe using alternatives, but that's too much work).
