Hardy boots fine, but the splash screen never shows. If I boot without splash everything goes as expected, with splash I just get a blank screen during the boot. So all the irritation during boot has gone but . . . so has the Ubuntu logo.
In other news, it seems that there are no problems with the icons on the panel if the panel is made totally transparent.
