The above fixes worked great, have an Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus motherboard. It's too bad this problem cannot be fixed for only the machines that are having the problem through a system update without breaking things for working machines. If only it was a bug that was clearly at fault so that the fix could be pushed out, but oh well, guess that's a fix for Ubuntu 8.10.
