I deleted my old profile and started from scratch. This fixed things for me. No problems so far, and I can add and manage bookmarks normally now.
For debugging purposes: I didn't have gmarks installed, and I wasn't (afaik) switching between versions of firefox. I only have firefox 3 installed. Anyhow, it's working now for me.
