I am facing the same problem of high CPU usage by mpd. For me usage
increases without necessarily going to the next song... after a while of
playing, CPU use increases enough to throttle up my laptop CPU to max
clocks. :(

I tried Scott's fix of using Pulse audio but mpd simply won't play when
I add the lines in step 3 of Scott's solution. It plays with without
these lines... but with high CPU usage.

Here are the last lines of /var/log/mpd/errors.log

No protocol specified
E: client-conf-x11.c: XOpenDisplay() failed
May 20 18:38 : Cannot connect to server in PulseAudio output "My MPD PulseAudio
Output" (attempt 1): Invalid argument

AFAIK PulseAudio is run by the user session. and in my Gnome session I
have this command running:

pactl load-module module-x11-xsmp

Please help me out. Scott, is there anything I am missing here?
