I have a similar problem, I don't know if it is related: if compiz is running and I start an xdvi in expert mode, then the X server crashes. I can start an xdvi in normal mode, but if I switch it to expert mode then it makes X crash too. However, when running xdvi in standard mode, the page is properly displayed.
