I followed your proposal, but while system was up and running I could
not catch any segfaults. As said, I never observed Nautilus crashing.

I now checked the timestamps in /var/log/messages and found/concluded:

it happend when issuing 'reboot' using the graphical way in the GNOME 
panel-applet (did not check shutdown till now).
It is not logged in 'dmesg' so it is happening during shutdown of the system.

I will try to further pin it down by stopping 'gdm' and 'init6' from a
virtual terminal. The way to record a backtrace is not applicable as far
as I understand?
