I just posted on brainstorm that i once had this feature - but then i did a clean install (for other reasons) and somehow lost it in the progress.
I know realise that I'm wrong in 2 respects: 1. The reason that the feature was "gone" was that i was playing wma files; it seems to work fine with mp3s and oggs. Why it shouldn't work for wmas, i don't know 2. My music only fades in/out when i pause it; Rhythmbox does indeed abruptly cut out when you stop or quit. So, as a "workaround", you could pause, then quit.
