What does compat mean in which context?

Debian patches OpenAFS to use a different, more informative module name.
I should try to talk the other OpenAFS developers into accepting that
patch for 1.5 at least sometime this week.  libafs was the old name for
the Transarc kernel module, but it doesn't really make sense within the
naming convention for Linux kernel modules.
