I'm having the same error on hardy with Sansa e250 (v2) .
I've changed the device to use MTP mode, and checked that usb_storage module
isn't loaded.
I get the following output from mtp-detect:
> libmtp version: 0.2.6.1
>
> Attempting to connect device(s)
> PTP: Opening session
> PTP_ERROR_IO: Trying again after re-initializing USB interface
> PTP: Opening session
> PTP: request code 0x1002 sending req wrote only 0 bytes instead of 16
> LIBMTP PANIC: Could not open session! (Return code 767)
> Try to reset the device.
> LIBMTP PANIC: configure_usb_devices() error code: 7 on line 1599
> Detect: There has been an error connecting. Exiting

It works fine when using mass storage mode, by the way.
