bmarsh, Why do you believe that there should be a 'liblzma.so.0' on your system, what claims it can not find it? Can you paste a log? There is no 'liblzma.so.0' to my knowledge at all, so if something thinks there is then that is a problem. And I was the one that tested and wrote the remaining pieces of dpkg-lzma support in Ubuntu.
dpkg uses the lzma binary which it pre-depends on so should always be installed on a system before the openoffice.org packages are attempted to be installed.
