I just checked this problem of the sound not playing during the logout function on a brand new installation of Hardy final release version and the sound will NOT play unless I go into Synaptic and install esound package, which in turn un-installs the pulse-audio-esound-compat package.
This is 2 different computers that I have gotten this exact same problem on the sound not playing unless the esound program replaces the pulse- audio esound. It may SHOULD work on Hardy, but it sure does not work on my computers !!!
