I am having the same problem on Hardy with pidgin 2.4.1. This might not be a problem with pidgin since I can't log in using their html client either (although I am using Firefox). Also, this appears to have happened to me at the same time this bug was reported. I suspected it was a round of plugins I installed but that seems unlikely now.
