I have had similar problems with gutsy .But on the same ide, I had another cdrom, after keeping alone the LG cdrom on the IDE it was working perfectly.
However after upgrade to hardy new bad things came /dev/hdc replaced with /dev/scd0 and looks like some cd do not work very well, empty media ! I will try to hack it.
