I agree that 1024x768 (or perhaps 800x600 to allow for window
decoration) is a reasonable default if you're running in VMware (at
least as long as adjusting the guest resolution to the host window isn't
supported).

You can check whether you're running in a virtual machine by calling
vmware-checkvm of the open-vm-tools package.  (There shouldn't be any
licensing issues with those FWIW.)
