My SMB share is on a Windows Server 2003-based file server.

When I enable the Guest account in Active Directory (by default, this
account is disabled) and add the domain\Guest account to the share-level
permissions on the SMB share, I can attach a file to an e-mail message
successfully.
I am not prompted for credentials and the file is immediately attached.

Thank you!
