Same problem. My /etc/network/interfaces file was > 300 (mostly empty lines) long. On the last lines, the interfaces are set to auto. I don't know what's wrong. This bug causes me not to be able to perform a workaround: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/5525
