Maybe this would be the best. For people using Google calendar, note that it is still possible (at least on my computer) to add it as a normal web calendar. As URL I use the "Private Adress" (iCal) given under the respective "Calendar Details" in Google's settings. This won't allow editing or adding new appointments into Google Calendar but at least they show up in the calendar view in the GNOME panel without freezing it.
