Thanks for the very detailed bug report. Seemingly fixed now. Using
Ubuntu 8.04, grep 2.5.3~dfsg-3.
$ grep -V | sed q
GNU grep 2.5.3
$ echo hello | grep -i --color=always -e ^ | hexdump -C
00000000 68 65 6c 6c 6f 0a |hello.|
00000006
$
--
grep hangs if using both the -i (--ignore-case) and --color options
