As an addendum, we've upped the memory on this box to 6GB and need a PAE kernel. Working backward, the 2.6.22 server kernel from gutsy doesn't boot, but 2.6.20-15.27 server bigiron from feisty does; that's what the server's going back in its rack with pending a proper fix for a 2.6.24 (or later) kernel.
