I also see this "formatting message" message occasionally and evolution hangs. I have evolution open continuously and it works most of the time. It can be running for many days (reading many emails) without showing this message. I have one pop and one imap account. The traces seem to suggest ldap is being used. I did setup an ldap account once, but it never managed to connect - I'll try removing that to see if it helps.
