I am having this problem too when upgrading to 8.04. My laptop is a sony vaio vgn-c25g. I can install ubuntu 8.04 fine but when i try to boot it it says: [ time(secs)] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 11s! [modprobe:1291] where time(secs) is the time its been trying to run.
