I have this same error:
[609.985601] BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!
On shutdown.
This computer was running dapper flawlessly. I installed beta 2 of edgy
amd64 because the dist-upgrade process failed and this error ocurred
while rebooting after the installation process (i.e. booting with the
live cd) and now after the installation.
I'm going to try and update and then I'll try and report more info.
