In reply to Harald Sitter: 1) Yes, it was probably changed only for the user, but it was not applied at login, which is the problem. Please re-read the bug to see that it requires re-openning the display settings dialog to get it to re-apply after logn. 2) No, I believe that you are incorrect here. This was a clean install, I did not have VMware Tools installed, so no "awful" business being done here, just pure BT.
