I installed Hardy in English using an English keyboard layout (easier
for me) and then after install I tried to set the keyboard layout to
German. The old Administration->Keyboard interface is gone and we're
only left with the basic keyboard layout preferences in which I removed
the old layout and put German in instead.
Problem 1) This doesn't affect the login window so you have to enter the
username in password using US keyboard layout
Problem 2) Even though the keyboard applet says German, the keyboard is still
US in all applications
As a workaround I hacked xorg.conf so at least the machine is usable
