I encountered the same problem with a 32-bit system.

I found that in the hosts file the 127.0.0.1 entry had been changed to
127.0.1.1.

Also found that changing an entry on freedesktop fixed everything and
updates completed normally:

-- goto System -> Authorizations --> freedesktop --> systemtoolsbackends
--> manage system configuration and granted my logon
