Had the same problem yesterday (error inserting ath_pci) but today I followed instructions from http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/Distro/Ubuntu: add ath_hal to /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common and rmmod all ath_hal, ath_pci, wlan modules. Then I cleaned and rebuilt madwifi from svn. modprobe ath_pci now works and I have an ath0 interface on my MacbookPro.
Haven't tried using the restricted package.
