Same problem for me: I upgraded a critical machine from 6.06LTS to 8.04LTS, and I end up with a non-working GDM, very frustrating... I cannot type login and password, but I can switch consoles (e.g. Ctrl- Alt-F1) so the keyboard is *somehow* functional in GDM! Mouse is OK, and keyboard works fine in consoles.
Is there at least a workaround to access X?
