I have also re-installed KUbuntu 7.10 text mode install on a more problematic laptop, a Thinkpad T61p, and that install went just fine. There was one issue with graphics and the nvidia card that is better handled in 8.04, but I was able to fix the display problem by booting into recovery and running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, selecting the vesa driver, and all was well.
