I also have a HP Pavilion dv5163cl with the final release of Ubuntu Hardy (Linux laptop 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux) and I tried the gdm.conf.custom and hibernate did not work, but suspend did work (did not work before). My wireless came back, took almost 45 seconds.
