xorg.conf is a stub in Hardy, so it's supposed to be largely empty. Config is now in per user in your home folder /.gnome2/monitors.xml the rest is done on the fly by xrandr. If xrandr isn't detecting your hardward properly you could try sudo displayconfig-gtk. This will create a new (filled in) xorg.conf for you.
