I've run evtest to see if the kernel event driver is the problem, and it
appears that it is not. Here is what it shows when I click once - you
will notice that there is just one button press and one button release
event:

Input driver version is 1.0.0
Input device ID: bus 0x11 vendor 0x2 product 0xa version 0x0
Input device name: "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint"
Supported events:
  Event type 0 (Sync)
  Event type 1 (Key)
    Event code 272 (LeftBtn)
    Event code 273 (RightBtn)
    Event code 274 (MiddleBtn)
  Event type 2 (Relative)
    Event code 0 (X)
    Event code 1 (Y)
Testing ... (interrupt to exit)
Event: time 1210110614.732530, type 1 (Key), code 272 (LeftBtn), value 1
Event: time 1210110614.732550, -------------- Report Sync ------------
Event: time 1210110614.799344, type 1 (Key), code 272 (LeftBtn), value 0
Event: time 1210110614.799361, -------------- Report Sync ------------

/proc/bus/event/devices contains this entry for the TrackPoint:

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=000a Version=0000
N: Name="TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input8
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse1 event8
B: EV=7
B: KEY=70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=3
