This is now working again in Hardy Heron, thanks!

Somehow the Gutsy version of kmix corrupted my
~/kde/share/config/kmixctrlrc and even the Gutsy live CD did not work. I
tried the Hardy live CD and the hardware volume roller worked out of the
box so I upgraded. It still wasn't working so I tried deleting this
config file and voila! It now works perfectly.

** Changed in: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => Fix Released
