Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

On Hardy updated from 7.10 (updated from 7.04, itself updated from 6.10...).
When a first user logs in, they can automatically mount and unmount their USB
keys. Everything is fine with them.
When a second user logs in, they could use USB keys with 7.10 without any
problem. They could not see the content of a key mounted by the other user,
which was good. But they could mount and unmount their own keys. This mechanism
completely broke during the upgrade to 8.04, whereby the second user cannot do
anything related to (their) USB keys. They cannot mount them, they cannot
unmount them.

Here is what I see on my syslog when the first user mounts a USB key:

The user unmounts the key, and give the physical device to the second
user. Here is what happens if the other user tries to mount it (or tries
to mount any other USB key for that matter):

after a little while, the second user gets fed up and disconnects the
USB key:

Following the recommendation from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices, here are more
