Although this is still ongoing in Ubuntu with Hardy (fresh install or upgrade), Debian testing/unstable work correctly with my monitor (as did Fiesty), suggesting something is odd with the Ubuntu X configuration. The situation is sufficiently bad that I've basically been forced to switch to running Debian full-time on that computer.
