The crash occurs because of the "gtk20.mo" file in /usr/share/locale-langpack/ro/LC_MESSAGES. Removing this file fixes the error. This bug is present in Hardy, too. Not only "gdm" crashes because of it - the attempt to browse for a file makes any application crash (e.g. choosing File->Open in gedit and browsing into any folder will make gedit crash). The Romanian translators probably do not care that teir work cannot be used...
