The problem seems to be related to fglrx. Xorg complained that this file could not be found.
I removed gdm and reinstalled it. The allowed me to get into the desktop, although the resolution was low. I installed all available updates and rebooted and things look fine now. In addition, I noticed that the update reset my software sources. I enabled the restricted sources, which may have allowed my ATI driver to get picked up, which I think is why I have graphics working now. So, I don't understand everything that happened, but I am working now. But, I think that there may be a bug in the upgrade relating to restricted drivers for video cards.
