Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cupsys
I did the official release internet upgrade from feisty to hardy. My network server HP Laserjet has worked fine for years using LPD protocol. The upgrade took cupsys to 1.3.7-1ubuntu3. I encountered "the usual perplexing mess" reported by many people, where cups claimed the print jobs were successful, and the printer status lights flashed, but nothing ever appeared on paper. A winXP system could still print, but my other feisty system sometimes suffered the same kind of symptoms (but could usually be cleared by power-cycling the printer). Following many other's advice, I found that I could print from hardy if I power-cycled the printer, rebooted hardy and then run "sudo aa- complain cupsd". Anything less was unlikely to clear the condition. Incidentally, when floundering about I had trouble defining and deleting printers until I discovered the ownership of several files in /etc/cups/ had changed from root.lpadmin to root.lp, so having my user as a member of the lpadmin group wasn't useful under hardy! After the aa-complain command, I found this message in /var/log/kern.log :- audit(1209558957.602:2): type=1502 operation="inode_permission" requested_mask="a::" denied_mask="a::" name="/dev/tty" pid=5665 profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd " namespace="default" The message turns up a lot in searches, but I haven't found a solution that works for me. I think the aa-logprof command is supposed to find the audit messages, but it doesn't. I think it should also suggest how to modify /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd to resolve the problem, but perhaps I am too stupid to see how to do it... I would like to get this problem properly documented and resolved, because I am sure many other people will upgrade to hardy, especially from dapper LTS, and will be baffled when they discover their working printer configurations are hopelessly broken... and they will have never heard of apparmor. ** Affects: cupsys (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- No print output after upgrade to hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225603 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
