Hi last comment from me - I have changed the sound setup, in system/preferences/sound/devices to alsa and all sound weirdness seems to have gone - no more popping and distorting when windows minimise, and thus far no freezing - so it would appear that the Pulseaudio system is at fault here - certainly I have never had a problem with my soundcard before in linux. This is my sound card - for what it is worth:
