Public bug reported: Sound worked in Hardy with my USB external sound box and ESD. Now I have no sound either at desktop start or with playing a sound file.

When configuring the Gnome audio preferences, I can choose among: 1- automatic identification 2- VIA 82C686A 3- USB audio 4- ALSA 5- ESD 6- OSS 7- Pulseaudio Choosing any apart from 2 and 3 and running the test is apparently successful, but no sound can be heard.
