Public bug reported:

Sound worked in Hardy with my USB external sound box and ESD. Now I have
no sound either at desktop start or with playing a sound file.

$ LANG=C aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: rev50 [VIA 82C686A/B rev50], device 0: VIA 82C686A/B rev50 [VIA

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: MP3 [Sound Blaster MP3+], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

$ asoundconf set-default-card MP3

$ LANG=C aplay Desktop/marcia\ di\ topolino\ .mp3
Playing raw data 'Desktop/marcia di topolino .mp3' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000
Hz, Mono

however, no sound can be heard. When configuring the Gnome audio preferences, I
can choose among:
1- automatic identification
2- VIA 82C686A
3- USB audio
4- ALSA
5- ESD
6- OSS
7- Pulseaudio

Choosing any apart from 2 and 3 and running the test is apparently successful,
but no sound can be heard.
Choosing 2 or 3 and pressing the Test button gives this error:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Impossibile aprire il device audio per la riproduzione.
