I have some similar problem, but with different symptoms suggesting that I have probably a different bug. Gnome panels would freeze for 2 minutes, only sporadically and only when connected to the wire network at work. Then after a timeout, the panels would respond normally. Sometime, some applets would die. However, during the freeze, I can right click the background and call up a gnome-terminal. It is not a total freeze.
