I would like to add a comment to what Serge Maneuf said: this issue also occurs for me in Gutsy 7.10, with GNOME and Compiz active. The point is that it's very difficult to know what causes this hang when we want to shutdown the PC as it's difficult to reproduce all the time. It seems erratic.
I upgraded to 8.04 (not an install from scratch, upgraded from over internet), and the issue is still there. I'll provide the information you mentionned on wiki the web page about GPM.
