Everyone who still gets the freeze (UI not responding etc), could you please try the following:
Could you please download http://people.ubuntu.com/~mvo/update-manager /release-upgrader-0.87.26-debug.tar.gz and download it to a temp directory (e.g. ~/test-upgrade). Then unpack it and run in a terminal "sudo ./hardy". When it hangs, please wait a few seconds and then press ctrl-c to cancel it and attach the updated /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log please. It should contain much more information what is going on.
