I have the same problem on two machines, one is running Ubuntu64 and the other Kubuntu64. I can only use the nv driver. With the NVIDIA-driver I get the same issue with VESA and so on. With startx I get the message as mentioned bevor, the driver module doesn't match with the kernel modul. I hope that there will be soon an package update.
